SELCO Warns of New Utility Scam

Residents are asked to call police if they are targeted.

According to a recent announcement, and text, from Shrewsbury Electric and Cable Operations, SELCO customers are actively being targeted by something known as the Utility Green Dot Scam. This is a scam that has cropped up in a number of locations across the country and appears to target utility customers.

The specifics of the scam are also listed on SELCO's Facebook page: 

• Caller tells customer their power will be turned off in 45 minutes if they do not make an immediate payment. 
• Caller tells customer that payment will only be accept through the purchase of a Green Dot pre-paid debit card. 
• Caller providers customer with a number to call to make payment once they have purchased the Green Dot card. 

"We are working closely with the Shrewsbury Police Department on this to warn residents of the danger," said the announcement. "If you have had contact with the scammers, please contact the Shrewsbury PD at 508-845-1212 to provide information."
