Shaw's Seeks Restitution After Ripped Off at Self-Scanner

Monday, Nov. 26 Joseph Rieck, 57, of 6 Burghardt St., Worcester, was summonsed to court on a complaint from Shrewsbury police to face a charge of larceny over $250. Judge Vito Virzi released Rieck on personal recognizance and scheduled a pretrial hearing for Jan. 31. According to a police report, Rieck is accused of avoiding paying pay for items at the Shaw's Supermarket, allegedly using the self-scan checkout on some 34 separate occasions between July and October to pay for only some items in his shopping cart. The store is seeking restitution of $2,074.36. Keith R. Avella, 38, of 233 Main St., Easthampton, was arrested by Northborough police and charged with malicious destruction of property, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. …
