Tracking the potential upcoming storm proves difficult for local forecasters.
Update, Tuesday, 9 p.m.: "The modeling guidance continues to defy the surface maps, but is coming in closer agreement with each other and this trend has continued all day," said Jim Arnold, weather specialist. "Therefore, I am going to settle on a mix of guidance and pattern recognition for this event. It continues to look like the storm center will pass out to sea well to our south, but since the storm is so large; it will impact southern New England with its snow and wind fields. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch and hazardous weather outlook for this weekend.
The National Weather Service is predicting between 6-10 inches of "heavy, wet" snow accumulation late Saturday night through Sunday morning, and issued a winter storm watch and hazardous weather outlook for the Shrewsbury area. The snow will hit the region on Saturday afternoon, with the heaviest occurring at night and into Sunday morning, according to the NWS. A 1-2 inch per hour snowfall rate is possible, and the potential exists for a heavy snow that may down trees and create scattered power outages. Our local weather specialist says our "next bit of winter weather" is coming Monday morning.
It ain't over yet. Jim Arnold, weather specialist with Shrewsbury Emergency Management, said it looks like our extra bit of winter weather is arriving Monday morning in the form of snow, sleet, freezing rain .... and then finally rain. "A warm front approaching from the west and southwest late tonight and tomorrow will bring a wintry mix of precipitation beginning around dawn Monday and continuing throughout much of the day," said Arnold. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory, corroborating Arnold's predictions with a forecast that also calls for freezing rain and sleet. Fire Captain Seth Colby said the department's shift was "business as usual."
When the governor said to stay home and stay off the road, Shrewsbury residents listened. Fire Captain Seth Colby was the shift commander during the blizzard and he said the department didn't have any major issues around town during the storm. "Everything went well," Colby said. "The storm was relatively uneventful." Colby said the department had to respond to several medical calls and transport residents to local hospitals, but the roads were clear and the department was prepared. "The Highway Department did a good job staying on top of the snow and I think the fact that people stayed off the roads and stayed home really helped," Colby said. The governor banned us from driving during the storm, so all of you weather-watchers may have had a limited vantage point from which to document the blizzard. That doesn't mean, however, that you couldn't catch a great snow scene right from the comfort of your home. And this includes the kids' furniture forts. Do you agree with the governor's decision or was it too drastic?
All non-emergency drivers were ordered off the roads on Friday when Gov. Deval Patrick issued an executive order banning travel during the blizzard. (Editor's note: The ban is lifted statewide as of 4 p.m. Saturday.) Patrick's executive order is being praised by some and bashed by others, reported The Boston Globe. While former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, who was in charge of the commonwealth during the Blizzard of ’78, praised the governor’s move, others called the order “tyrannical” and say the strict ban and hefty fines were too much, according to The Globe. We at Patch like to have fun – even when we’re covering a story as big as the Blizzard of ’13! So when the biggest storm in years (potentially in the history of Boston weather) is headed our way, we get into battle mode – and even get a little silly. That’s what this idea is about – and we want you to take part too! A fun way we want to track the storm across Massachusetts is through lawn ornaments. Locals weigh in on their feelings about having a blizzard.
Some could take it or leave it. Some love it. Some hate it. Based on a smattering of snow soaked interviews conducted in parking lots in town today, so far it looks like "hate" is winning the contest. Patch also notes that many people "hate" having their picture taken, and are often met with, "Oh, you're going to take my picture!? No. No. I don't want that. Find someone more photogenic." People should use their common sense in situations like this--but there are always some who won't and will endanger others in the process. The ban was good in that respect, and the $500 fine certainly should have made folks think twice if they were hesitating over driving or staying home for no particular reason. However, the threatened jail time was absurd--and enough's been said about that here… more ›
