Class dismissed! The Ski Ward in Shrewsbury was packed on Tuesday with kids from all around the region hitting the slopes instead of the books this week, as school vacation is just getting warmed up.

The Ski Ward, according to its recent post on Facebook and YouTube, hosted the second of three events in the Eastern Boarder and Boston Ski and Tennis Rail Jam at its mountain. The finals are scheduled for Feb. 9.

A group of Patch employees went to Ski Ward to receive a lesson.
Patch headed to "snow school" at the Ski Ward in Shrewsbury last week, with editor Charlene Arsenault taking some first-ever downhill skiing lessons. Patch the reindeer always wedges his way onto the scene, and did so again this time. Snow School at the Ski Ward employs more than 100 instructors for its ski and snowboard classes. Racing instruction, too, is available. Classes are available for groups, individuals, and all ages. Ski Ward also offers tubing, but you don't need much instruction for that activity. The first storm of the winter is packing a wallop in Shrewsbury.
The roads have been plowed in town, but some side streets are slippery as of this afternoon. As the winter storm continues to pummel Shrewsbury, make sure to take it slow on the roads. Snow is expected to taper off by midnight tonight, but temperatures will only reach about 27 degrees. Another storm is also moving through the area on Friday, which will bring rain and snow late in the evening, according to Weather.com. With school cancelled around town, residents dug themselves out and many kids enjoyed sledding and snowboarding at their favorite hills in town. John "Jack" Street, a student at Nipmuc Regional High School died after an accident at Ski Ward last night.
Nipmuc Regional High School Principal John Clements offered counseling services to those in the school community and offered the family condolences in his blog posted on the website earlier today. "This is a horrible tragedy that impacts all of us at Nipmuc," Clements wrote in his blog. "Jack will be remembered as a bright and talented young man with a great sense of humor and a tremendous personality. His loss will be felt deeply by us not only today, but also in the weeks, months and years to come." An Upton teen died after falling from the ski lift at Ski Ward.
The Upton teen who died last night after falling from a ski lift at the Ski Ward, has been identified as John "Jack" Street, 18, of 5 Kensington Ln., Upton, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. The preliminary investigation shows Street was training with teammates from the Nipmuc Regional High School ski team when he may have suffered a seizure while riding up the hill on a ski lift. Street fell from the lift and landed face down on the icy ground below. Police received a 911 call at 6:43 p.m. Street was taken to the UMass Medical Center in Worcester where he died at 7:24 p.m. The family declined to comment, but said that he was known as Jack. The Worcester County District Attorney's Office reported a 19-year-old from Upton died after he fell from a chair lift. "The boy fell from the lift to the icy ground and was found there face down and unconscious," said Tim Connolly, spokesperson for Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr. "The name of the teenager will not be released at this time." Connolly said the teen was a member of the Nipmuc Regional High School ski team and was taken to UMass after the fall. Shrewsbury Fire Capt. Mark Mann said a male teenager fell about 30 feet from the ski lift at about 6:45 p.m. and sustained a head injury.
