Case Continued For Man Found Hiding in Library

Samuel McGann has been ordered to stay away from the Shrewsbury Public Library.

A 19-year-old Shrewsbury man, charged with a variety of offenses last month after police found him hiding in the Shrewsbury Public Library, saw his case continued without a finding this week in Westborough District Court. Samuel A. McGann, 19, of 552 Main St., Apt. 2, Shrewsbury, was found hiding in the library at 12:05 a.m. March 26, about seven hours after the library had closed, according to police documents. He actively resisted arrest when officers attempted to take him into custody and his behavior created a risk to the key holder who responded because of his tumultuous behavior, according to police documents. Further investigation revealed he had broken into the depository bank bag and removed cash, according to police documents. …

IMAGE GALLERY: Kids Celebrate Mardi Gras

Local children enjoyed learning and creating masks during a Mardi Gras event at the library.

Colorful masks made of sequins, feathers and glitter filled the large meeting room at the library as children enjoyed learning about Mardi Gras. The children who attended the events at the library on Wednesday and Friday also made dice to use in a game where they were the moving pieces. Both parents and children alike enjoyed learning about the Mardi Gras festivities and took home colorful masks and beads in honor of the New Orleans celebration.

Why is Borders Still Empty?

The Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union is building right across the street from the existing Borders location.

Why do you think the Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union didn't choose the empty Border's property? The credit union sold the property to the town almost a year ago, so the town could move forward to the now on hold expansion to the Shrewsbury Public Library. With the empty buildings in town, and Borders only being a recent one on Route 9, why do you think they didn't choose that property—it's right across the street?

Library Trustees to Reduce Size of Building Project

The board met last night and agreed to go back to the drawing board.

Shrewsbury Public Library Board of Trustee Laurie Hogan announced today that the board got approval from the state to reduce the size of the proposed 42,767 by 10 percent and still be eligible for the $8 million state grant. "We heard from voters that the library project was still a little too big, so we asked the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners if we could reduce the size to 38,490, and they agreed," Hogan said. "We've also scheduled a public forum on March 12 for people to come and tell us their thoughts and then we will submit the suggestions to the selectmen." Since the failed library vote in October, the Library Building Committee had been disbanded, but the trustees have been discussing how to fix the current library …

Poll: What Should Happen to the Stalled Library Project

While town officials regroup, what do you think should happen to the library property?

The town owns the Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union property adjacent to the library, but after the defeat of the library expansion project in October, mums the word on the plans. What do you think should happen to the current library? With the influx of e-readers and tablets, do you think a library can survive? Do you think we need a community gathering place in town? Library Trustee Laurie Hogan said no decisions have been made on redesigning the library building project, but construction has started on the new location for the Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union property on Lake Avenue. Soon the town will own a vacant building adjacent to the library. Are you concerned about the economy? Since the October vote, Grafton also defeated the …

The groundwork/investigation has already been done. The original proposal was barely defeated by popular vote and now it is time to decide on a scaled down project that reflects both the established needs and the towns fiscal wishes. The State has approved the grant monies, the Town now owns the land next door, the basic architectural parameters have been established and we need to act now to get…   more ›

VIDEO: Share Your Geek at the Library

Local experts and craftsmen showed their passion on Sunday.

From the Lone Ranger to basketweavers and beadmakers, thanks to Dewey Day at the Shrewsbury Public Library, many patrons enjoyed learning about the many books available to lend. "We wanted the stacks to come alive," said Shrewsbury Public Library Director Ellen Dolan. "We used the Dewey Decimal System to highlight some great local craftsman and direct patrons to the books to learn more about what was featured." Many patrons enjoyed learning from the experts about floral arranging, quilting, woodworking and being a tinsmith. "I really enjoyed the beads," said Jaclyn Holovnia, 10, of Shrewsbury. "I really enjoy taking out books at the library, but I didn't know much about the Dewey Decimal System." The event was part of the national Get Your…
