While wholesale prices are at a high, SELCO recently reduced its rates and remain among the lowest in the state.
In Feburary, the prices for natural gas in New England hit a 10-year-high, which elevated wholesale electricity prices to more than triple last year, according to an article in the Worcester Business Journal. With information supplied by grid administrator ISO New England, WBJ said that cold weather and high demand for gas, as well as constraints in the pipelines to deliver it, increased the price. Many of New England's power plants use natural gas, which in turn drives up the price of wholesale electricity. According to a SELCO release the rates are comparable to other area providers.

SELCO employees were with St. Anne's Church to provide help for local families in need.
Shrewsbury Electric & Cable Company provides residents with many of their utility needs, but did you know SELCO also provides holiday assistance to families in need? For nearly 20 years employees have been collecting donations through Santa's Toy Box to give to St. Anne's Church for distribution to local families. "It was a way for some of our employees to collect toys for the needy families in town,” Jackie Pratt, marketing and customer care manager at SELCO said. "Because our donations stay local we like to think this is a great way for people to help those in need around them." Santa's Toy Chest isn't just for children’s toys. Pratt said they collect anything that could be useful for an infant through a teenager. "Last year we had …

With the nor'easter, residents dig out from the storm.
A state of emergency was declared last night and many residents throughout the town are without power. Last night the town opened the Shrewsbury Senior Center to be used as a warming center. SELCO tweeted the news around midnight so residents can stay warm while crews restore power to the town. "Approximately 15 percent to 18 percent of town is currently without power," said Jackie Pratt, marketing and customer care manager via Twitter. "Damage is widespread, but we can work much quicker in daylight." Two crews from Connecticut are coming to help SELCO restore power and Pratt compared the damage from the storm to the 2008 ice storm that hit our area. Crews are working at Hunting Avenue, Main Boulevard and Wachusett Avenue currently and …

First, I realize that our cable rates are cheaper than other local choices. Having said that, I have several questions and observations. Second, these two things I understand; 1.) An issue is thru-put, hardware can only support so many 1's and 0's, and upgrades are needed to support everyone... and 2.) companies the town subscribe to for channels have packages only, not a la cart choices. As for…   more ›
