Woman Crashes Into Tree on I-290 Wednesday Morning

Traffic was backed up for about an hour after a woman veered off the highway.

Massachusetts State Police responded to calls reporting a car off I-290 westbound near exit 22 in Shrewsbury shortly before 9 a.m. The 79-year-old female driver had veerred off the roadway from the passing lane into the wooded median area, hitting a tree. She was trapped in her car, which landed about 75 feet into the woods, said police. Shrewsbury EMS transported the woman to UMass Medical Center, where is is being treated for non life-threatening injuries. Traffic in the left lane was backed up for about an hour, said Todd Nowlan, spokesperson for MSP.

Teen Trapped Inside Car

He 'suffered a medical issue' while driving, police say.

A Westborough teenager was pinned inside a car that was wedged under the rear of an oil delivery truck on South Street this afternoon, Westborough Police said. Zachary Diamond, 17, of 27 Cook St., "suffered a medical issue" while driving a 2001 Lexus south on South Street around noon, the investigation by Officer Jeffrey Keaveney showed, Police Chief Alan Gordon said in a press release today. Diamond then lost control of the car and "ran into the rear of the truck which was proceeding in the same direction," near 132 South St., Gordon said. The 2005 Freightliner owned by Al's Oil in Shrewsbury was driven by Alfred Perron, 37, of 2 Laurel St., Oxford. UPDATED: Two Transported After I-290 Crash

A two-car accident was reported on I-290 west around 8 a.m. this morning.

A two-car accident was reported at 7:50 a.m. between exits 23 and 22 on I-290 westbound. The two cars involved are a 2008 Honda Civic driven by a 32-year-old Natick woman and a 2001 Honda Accord driven by a 29-year-old Marlborough woman, according to the state police in Framingham. The scene was cleared as of 8:24 a.m., and the two drivers were transported by Shrewsbury EMS to UMASS for possible injuries. State Police are on scene with the accident and State Trooper Robert O'Brien is investigating the accident.

UPDATED: Police Officer Struck by SUV Outside St. John's

After Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu's speech at St. John's High School, an SUV struck a police officer directing traffic.

At approximately 8:23 p.m., Shrewsbury Police Officer Brian P. Gerardi, 59, was reportedly struck by a car in front of St. John's High School on Main Street in town. Officer Gerardi was assigned to direct traffic at the exit of St. John’s High School, where Archbishop Desmond TuTu was conducting a scheduled speaking engagement. While directing traffic, a 2007 Jeep Commander driven by Mary Degemmis-Shusta, 56, of Princeton, started to exit onto Main Street westbound, and struck Officer Gerardi, knocking him to the ground. Police, Fire and EMS responded to the scene and traffic was diverted from in front of the school. No Injuries Reported After Accident on Route 140

A trailer rolled out onto Route 140 causing a truck to swerve and hit a light pole.

Shrewsbury Police, Fire, and EMS responded to a rollover accident on Route 140, just north of Route 20 where a six-wheel box truck struck a utility pole, snapping it into three pieces, and rolled over on it side. Dale S Urbank, 45, of 4A Fletcher Street, Plainville, was driving a 2011 Ford pickup, towing a 2004 utility trailer loaded with granite in the industrial complex at 167 Memorial Drive. As he approached the exit of the complex, the trailer he was towing became detached from the truck, and rolled out of control out onto Route 140. The trailer crossed over the northbound lane, and into the path of a 2001 Chevrolet box truck heading south, being operated by Dionicio A Nunez, 44, of 22 Jennings St., #2, of Worcester.  Mr. Nunez swerved…

Four Transported after Two-Car Accident on Route 9

Earlier today, four people were transported to UMASS after injuries sustained in a crash.

Shrewsbury Police, Fire, EMS responded to a two-car crash and rollover, on Route 9 east just east of Shrewsbury Commons at 12:24 p.m. A 2008 Subaru Forester operated by Antonia Cappuccio, 61, of Jefferson, MA was headed east on Route 9 east, east of Commons Drive, when it was struck by a 1995 Lincoln Continental operated by Mary Iannotti, 84, of Worcester, MA. The Subaru and the Lincoln then struck the center barrier. The Subaru rolled onto its roof coming to rest in the eastbound travel lane, and the Lincoln came to rest off of to the right side of the road. Shrewsbury Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate the driver of the Lincoln from the vehicle, police said. Both operators were injured, and were transported to UMASS Memorial…

Two-Car Rollover Accident with Injuries on Route 20

Earlier tonight, Fire and EMS responded to a two-car accident on Route 20 on the Worcester line.

Two drivers were taken to UMASS Memorial Medical Center-Worcester after a two-car accident on Route 20 earlier tonight. At about 7:20 p.m., the Worcester and Shrewsbury Fire Departments responded to a two-car accident near the city line on Route 20. "One woman was trapped in her car," said Shrewsbury Fire Captain Bruce Card. "The Worcester Fire Department was first on the scene, so they took the lead and cut the windshield—they were the principle extracators." Both drivers were injured, though further information was not available on their conditions. The accident is under investigation.
