Hundreds Participate in Relay for Life of Shrewsbury

About $42,000 was raised and donations are being accepted through August.

Hundreds of people participated in the 8th annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Shrewsbury, which started at 6 p.m. Friday and continued until 11 a.m. Saturday.

According to event organizers, the relay raised roughly $42,000. Donations are still being accepted and can be made by clicking here.

Throughout the past eight years, the Shrewsbury event has raised more than $500,000 for the American Cancer Society, according to event co-chairs Shelly Keene and Mary Pritchard.

Some participants, like Rhoda Decatur, walked in memory of a loved one. Decatur's mother died of pancreatic cancer in 2004.

Kathleen Scrimgeour walked in memory of her husband, who died in 2004 after a battle with brain cancer. Scrimgeour, who lives in Shrewsbury, walked as part of a team of about 20 people called "Hopping for a Cure."

"He loved frogs," Scrimgeour said of her husband. "He was my prince charming."

More than 95 Relay for Life events are planned for this year in Massachusetts, according to the American Cancer Society. The event took place at and organizers say it's not too soon to plan for next year's Shrewsbury event, which will be held in May. For more information, click here.
