Cub Scouts Earn Highest Scout Award

Local cub scouts awarded for achievement in the Arrow of Light Ceremony.

The following information was submitted by Maureen Pellizzari:

On Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, Cub Scouting's Blue and Gold Ceremony was held at Floral Street School.

All 11 Webelos 2 boys earned Cub Scout's highest award, the Arrow of Light (AOL). It's one of two Cub Scout Badges (also the Religious Emblem) that may be worn on the Boy Scout uniform.

The AOL accomplishment involved 18 months of achievement including:

  • Met with Chairperson of the Board of Selectmen and attended a Town Hall meeting.
  • Worked on a service project (with Lt. Gov. Tim Murray officiating the event).
  • Learned & demonstrated CPR & First Aid; completed a portion of the 'Artist' Achievement at the Worcester Art Museum.
  • Participated in outdoor events (in all manner of weather) including conservation efforts; a 3-mile hike to Mt. Pisgah; hike through Purgatory Chasm; identified poisonous plants & geological features.
  • Visited a scientist's WPI lab; interviewed an electrical engineer; learned to explain Bernoulli's principle, Pascal's law, and Newton's First law of motion; led science stations for 50 younger Scouts.
  • Completed weekly home assignments and after-school meetings at the den leader's home.
  • Practiced public speaking and leadership skills during pack meetings and flag ceremonies.

Specifically, the Arrow of Light required the following Achievement Badges:

1) Fitness

2) Citizen

3) Readyman

4) Outdoorsman; then the Dens had to earn five others:

5) Geologist

6) Forester

7) Artist

8) Engineer

9) Scientist

All 11 Scouts showed diligence as they each earned at least four additional Achievement Badges on their own. They graduated from Cub Scouts and joined Boy Scouts, forming their own Patrol within Boy Scout Pack 158, which meets at St. Mary's Church in Shrewsbury.
