5 Places to Donate in Town

From donating toys to helping provide heat or food to those in need, there are many ways to help this season.

1. and the Worcester County Department of Children & Families (formerly DSS) are holding a until Dec. 10. Items needed include: new non-violent toys for kids of all ages; winter hats, gloves and scarves; gift cards in small amounts to stores like Target and Walmart; and sports balls for older kids. Bring items to any of these three Shrewsbury collection locations before Dec. 10:

  • , 23 Maple Ave. 

2. You can make a donation online to the by clicking here or by mailing a check, payable to the Worcester County Food Bank, to Worcester County Food Bank, 474 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury, MA 01545. Another way to help is to participate in the Food for Friends drive by purchasing a paper turkey for $1, $3 or $5 at the checkout. Funds raised will be donated to local hunger relief efforts. This program ends Dec. 8. For more information on ways to help the food bank, visit http://www.foodbank.org.

3. To help the Shrewsbury schools, consider donating to the Shrewsbury Education Foundation by clicking here or by mailing a check, payable to Shrewsbury Education Foundation, to Shrewsbury Education Foundation, P.O. Box 282, Shrewsbury, MA 01545.

4. Shrewsbury Oil Assistance Relief (SOAR) provides emergency oil deliveries to Shrewsbury residents "who have run out of oil and need help until more perminant assistance can be provided." To help provide emergency oil assistance relife, send a donation to Shrewsbury Oil Assistance Relief (SOAR), c/o Shrewsbury Youth & Family Services, 240 Maple Ave., Shrewsbury, MA 01545.

5. The Share the Warmth program that "assists needy Shrewsbury residents with funding to maintain electric service for heat, light and hot water through the cold winter months." All funds donated go directly to assist needy Shrewsbury families and seniors having difficulty affording heat and electricity. To donate, click here.
