Students Head to the New Sherwood School This Week

On Wednesday morning, students will parade from their old school to a newly built, state of the art building. The new Sherwood Middle School, which serves fifth and sixth graders, will open its doors ahead of schedule and under budget.

The Shrewsbury Lantern took readers on a virtual tour, complete with a photo gallery, of this flagship building.

Voters approved in March of 2010 the debt exclusion of $23.3 million to fund the construction of the project, which had been approved at Town Meeting on Feb. 9, 2010. Budgeted at a cost of $47.3 million, the remainder was to be paid for by the Massachusetts Building Authority. 

"Ground was broken and substantial progress was made on the construction of the building during 2011," said Kimberlee Cantin, executive assistant for communications and operations, Shrewsbury Public Schools. "At the time of this report the project remains ahead of schedule and substantially under budget." 

The Sherwood Middle School Building Committee was initially established on May 19, 2004, and was re-authorized on May 21, 2009. The Committee is charged with the planning and oversight of the renovation, expansion and/or replacement of the Sherwood Middle School.

"The School Department is appreciative of the work of the Sherwood Middle School Building Committee," said Cantin, "and the various architects, project managers, and construction contractors who are in the process of creating an outstanding new educational facility for our community."
