Shrewsbury Resident Makes Strides at University

Victoria Benoit has made the Dean's List, was named athlete of the week and continues to give back to the community.

The following press release was submitted by AnneMarie Hurley:

Victoria “Tory” Benoit of Shrewsbury continues to achieve academic and athletic success at Roger Williams University (RWU) in Bristol, RI. Currently a second semester sophomore, Tory was recently named to the university’s dean’s List for the third time. RWU students must achieve and maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher to receive this distinction. Benoit, a criminal justice major, is also a member of Phi Alpha Delta, RWU’s law honor society and SOAR, the university’s leadership program.

Tory serves as a resident advisor for 30 freshmen living in the Willows Housing Complex. She will greet prospective Hawks at RWU’s accepted student days later this month and is a volunteer at the Bristol Animal Shelter.

Continuing her commitment to community service Tory is looking forward to participation in RWU’s first on-campus Relay for Life organized by Jessica Sebring, of Shrewsbury, and a first-ever PINK game for the RWU soccer team which she has organized for the 2012 season. In the interim Tory is busy studying for midterms after which she will again participate in RWU’s alternative spring break program heading to Virginia this year with Habitat for Humanity. Last St. Patrick’s Day Tory was busy putting nails into a roof in Fort Smith, AK.

Tory is a key member of the RWU women’s soccer team and played in all 22 games during her sophomore season. She was named RWU Female Athlete of the Week in September after scoring two goals within 2 minutes and having her potential hat-trick shot hit the post. Roger William’s University won The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship (CCC) for the second year in a row this fall and made their second consecutive NCAA appearance. Tory played a major role in securing the 2011 CCC Championship and NCAA berth for the Hawks with not one, but two game saving stops during the championship game. RWU posted the widely viewed video footage of Tory streaking in to block an open shot on net and subsequent rebound with the RWU keeper on the ground.

After returning from building a habitat house in Virginia, Tory and her teammates on the RWU women’s track and field team (including Maria Brenner of Shrewsbury) will open the 2012 track season with the Huskie Invitational at Northeastern University. Tory hopes to help the Lady Hawks earn their third consecutive Commonwealth Conference Track Championship.

Upon completion of final exams and the track season Tory will be participating in an RWU mini-mester experience observing the court system of four European countries including the international tribunal at the Hague. She will return just in time to begin a summer internship with a local company.
