Shrewsbury Class Sizes Increasing

The Shrewsbury School Committee discussed the impact of class size on the district's ability to keep up with mandates.

School Committee members said Wednesday night they are starting to see the effects of higher class sizes.

Class sizes are well above School Committee guidelines, averaging 26 to 30 students per classroom, Superintendent Joseph Sawyer told the School Committee Wednesday night.

Because of the class sizes, Sawyer said, the school district is falling behind in state-mandated curriculum changes, the Telegram & Gazette reported.

"What this says to me is that budgets have consequences," School Committee member Jason F. Palitsch said, as reported in the Telegram. "I would have a hard time accepting that higher class sizes are not playing a role here."
