Worcester Credit Union is abuzz with excitement over upcoming Community Spelling Bee

WORCESTER _ Everyone was abuzz at Worcester Credit Union (WCU) as employees Jason England, Wendy Matos and Deborah Tillman, the “Worcester Credit Union Spell Checkers” team, studied their dictionaries in anticipation of the 16th Annual Qunisigamond Community College (QCC) Spelling BEE.  The group will be one of 20 teams of three people to compete in this year’s BEE.

“The QCC Spelling Bee is great way for the community to come together in a fun, competitive manner, while ultimately sharing a philanthropic goal to raise funds for student scholarships. It’s a ‘m–a-g-n-a-n-i-m-o-u-s’ act and one where bragging rights as top team are coveted,” said Steven Bud, Ed. D., QCC’s Acting Vice President of Community Engagement.

The event will take place on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 7 p.m. at QCC’s Hebert Auditorium, 670 West Boylston Street, Worcester. The Spelling BEE is sponsored by the QCC Foundation, with all proceeds from the event going toward programs and student scholarships.

“This is not only great fun, but it’s also for a worthwhile cause,” said WCU President and CEO Karen E. Duffy. “We participated in this event several years ago but did not win. We’re hoping to change that this year.”

Allen Fletcher, Chairman of Worcester Publishing, will serve as Spellmaster, with Andrea MacRitchie, QCC Dean of Library and Academic Support Services, serving as the authority on the English language, and Mary Christian, President of the QCC Alumni Association, serving as Beekeeper.
