Special Education Non-Profit To Train Volunteers

Boston, MA - The Recruitment, Training and Support Center (RTSC) for Special Education Surrogate Parents (SESPs), a project of the Federation for Children with Special Needs, will host a free orientation for Massachusetts residents interested in helping local children succeed in schools. The training will take place in Fitchburg on Thursday, July 24, 2014 from 11 am to 2 pm at Seven Hills Family Services Center

1460 John Fitch Highway, Fitchburg, MA
Special Education Surrogate Parents volunteer to make educational decisions for students whose parents are unknown or unable to do so. Federal education law requires that a student's parent or guardian be included in the special education decision-making process. However, children in state custody may not have anyone to fill that role.

Volunteers will learn how they can help these students using specific skills and knowledge of special education that they will learn in the training. This three-hour training session will cover childhood trauma and its effect on education.

Registration required. Contact Emily at egaudette@fcsn.org or (617) 399-8342 to sign up for orientation or to request more information about the program. You can also register online http://fcsn.org/rtsc/events/
