Earth Day was founded on April 22, 1970 by U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson. The purpose for celebrating Earth Day is to inspire appreciation and awareness for all things occurring naturally on earth. Today, Earth Day is celebrated globally by the Earth Day Network in more than 175 countries annually. Many communities celebrate Earth Week with a week of activities focused on environmental issues. This year, Earth Day is Friday, April 22. Be sure to check out the Patch Calendar and our Grab & Go Planner for this weekend’s Earth Day events.

No matter how small, every environmentally-positive step is significant. Tell us what steps you have taken for the betterment of our natural environment. What everyday things do you and your family do to help the environment? What lessons and practices are your children learning in school about a commitment to the planet? How does your family plan to celebrate Earth Day this year?
