It's School Vacation Week; Get Out There and Enjoy It
The ice cream truck has been spotted at Ellsworth Park, trees and flowers are blooming, and spring sports are in full gear. It's also time for the Northborough school's spring vacation week from April 16 to 20.
It's spring school vacation next week and the weather is warming up in and around Shrewsbury, making it perfect for some outdoor fun. Here are some ideas to explore the area and enjoy some family time together.
Baby Animals and Hikes: Spring brings new baby animals. Sturbridge Village is expecting newborn lambs and has a full calendar of fun activities for vacation week. They are planning special Patriots Day activities on April 16. Also, If you arrive before noon on April 13, admission is only $5.
The Massachusetts Audubon Society also has great nature centers and trails to explore. Drumlin Farm in Lincoln, MA and Broad Meadow Brook in Worcester, MA are close by. There is a small admission fee for nonmembers.

The MA Department of Conservation and Recreation continues with its No Child Left Inside campaign with their Park Passport, which encourages visits to the MA state parks to have your passport stamped at each one. There are 76 state parks in MA, 25 of which are in the Central MA region.
Opening Days: Davis Farmland opened on April 12 and Southwicks Zoo will open on April 14.

Boston Marathon and History: It wouldn’t be vacation week without celebrating Marathon Monday and Patriot’s Day. There are several Northborough residents running the marathon this year and a lot of places along the route to cheer them on. Here is a link for the spectator’s guide.
Parades and reenactments are scheduled for the weekend in Lexington, Concord and at the Minute Man National Historical park to commemorate the start of the American Revolutionary War on April 19, 1775.
It’s Titanic Week at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut from April 12 through April 18 with themed activities and a special exhibit commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Titanic voyage and sinking.
Earth Week is being celebrated at the Ecotarium. On April 20 admission is half price and there will be a full schedule of events, live demos and entertainment. The Ecotarium recently opened a new exhibit, Tradition of Games.
Let's not forget about Northborough's own day on April 21.
If It Rains: Northborough Free Library will be closed on Monday, April 16, but numerous activities and programs are scheduled (some requiring registration) including a drop in craft to make your own mobile on Wednesday, April 18, a Wii Bowling Tournament, and a morning movie on Thursday, April 19.
Tatnuck Book Store in Westborough is also offering some fun indoors. On Tuesday, April 17, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., Hooray for Books will be there. Books based on the theme of pizza will be read and then kids ages three through first grade will make a pizza treat. Registration is a must as there is a 25 person limit. Also at Tatnuck on Friday, April 20 from 11 a.m. to noon will be balloon artist Roger the Baloonatic.
Build Something: Lowe's Home Improvement holds a kids' Build and Grow clinic twice a month at the Westborough store from 10-11 a.m. Registration is needed and can be done at this link. The clinics are geared towards toddler and elementary school aged children and parent assistance might be needed. Kids will receive a workshop apron and a pair of goggles. The next clinic will be held on April 14 and kids will build a Game Show Chip Drop Game.
Mill Stores in Westborough will be holding an activity, Painted Birdhouses, on Wednesday, April 18 from noon to 2 p.m. only.
Kids Fly Free: Kids can ride an airplane for free at Marlboro Airport on Sunday, April 21, at 9 a.m. The Young Eagles rally, sponsored by EAA Chapter 673, is offering free airplane rides for kids age 8 to 17. Reservations are required so call 508-509-2296 to reserve a seat. The child must be accompanied by parent or legal guardian.
Ice Cream: Nothing hits the spot after a fun day of being outdoors more than ice cream. Trombetta's is opening this month with their homemade ice cream. and also serve your favorite flavors.
Enjoy the week off no matter what you do; and know that there are only 43 more days of school until summer vacation!
