Local Kitchen Remodel- Before & After

Local Kitchen Remodel- Before & After

The Harvey Remodeling team, led by Senior Designer, Theresa O'Brien, AKBD, recently completed a local kitchen remodeling project. The homeowners bought the house from a relative, living in it for several years before taking the next step of making it truly their own. They wanted to preserve the charm and integrity of the home while adding in features of comfort and beauty that they could be proud of when guests came to visit.

Some items on the family's wish list to address included:

  • A mudroom
  • A casual area for quick meals for two small children
  • More natural lighting, storage and countertop space
  • An area suitable for both formal and casual dining
  • A work area with a desk
  • Improving traffic flow from the back door to the family room
  • Rearranging the floor plan to move the powder room entrance out of the kitchen

The Solution

The family was hoping to have a home more like the ones they'd seen in magazines, rather than one that was forever steeped in a traditional setting. All of their goals were met.

We upgraded the kitchen with new stainless steel appliances, added beautiful cabinetry and increased the amount of countertop prep space. The space from the traditional kitchen table became a center island with shelving for cookbooks and seating for the kids to have quick meals. This space can also be used for food prep and delivering groceries.

Original and new hardwood floors were feathered in together for a stunning combination of past and present.

The window over the kitchen sink was extended to three panels to improve natural lighting. Additional overhead and recessed lighting adds to the functionality of the room, improving visibility of countertop and work desk areas.

A dedicated wine rack and a storage space for glasses were created above a portion of the countertops.

A table that doubles as a formal or casual dining area is surrounded by a stylish blend of modern armless chairs, an antique bench and chair seating that provides a cozy atmosphere.

Entryways to adjoining spaces created better traffic flow and provided a smooth transition to other parts of the home. The entrance to the powder room was successfully relocated to an improved location and is no longer directly accessed from the kitchen.
