5 Things You Need to Know Today: Aug. 24

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

2. The first annual Kicking Butt for Crohn's 5K Road Race will take place at at 9 a.m. Saturday. Walkers are welcome. Registration costs $20. All proceeds will go to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). For more information, visit www.kickingbuttforcrohns.org. 

3. Boys entering grades 1 through 5 are invited to find out what Cub Scouts is about by attending Pack 146's August meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lake Street Park. 5. The town has posted a notice to Lake Quinsigamond boaters regarding changes in the boating rules due to the reconstruction of the Route 9 bridge. According to the notice, the following rules have been approved by the Lake Quinsigamond Commission and will be implemented in the coming week:

• The NO WAKE zones will be extended to 300' north and south of the bridge. The limits of the NO WAKE zones will be marked with warning buoys and will be strictly enforced.

• The span(s) which will be open for safe passage under the bridge will not always be the same. In order to indicate which span(s) are open for safe passage, conventional roadway traffic lights will be installed over each arch of the existing bridge to indicate open and closed passageways under the bridge. A "GREEN light indicates the span is safe to pass under and a RED light indicates it is not safe to pass under.

•  A sign will be anchored near the NO WAKE buoy that will indicate to boaters that the bridge is under construction and to follow the traffic signals for safe passage.
