Cold Makes Teeth More Sensitive

This problem is becoming more prevalent as proper dental care is becoming more common and our elderly population is keeping their teeth longer.

As we age our teeth often become more sensitive to temperature. There are a few different things that can work together or independently to cause sensitivity in teeth. This problem is becoming more prevalent as proper dental care is becoming more common and our elderly population is keeping their teeth longer.

As we get older the majority of us will have some degree of gum recession which exposes the root surfaces of our teeth. The roots of our teeth are porous allowing them to attach to the gum tissue. When pores in our teeth are exposed to hot, cold or sweet items they can transmit that sensation directly to the nerve of the tooth, often felt as discomfort or pain.

Some individuals never develop sensitivity in these areas because components in their saliva fill these pores and protect them from tooth sensitivity. Those of us that do suffer from tooth sensitivity can artificially block the transmission of pain to the nerve of the teeth with a specially formulated toothpaste that contains potassium nitrate which will clog root pores.

Remember that root surfaces are softer than hard enamel and can be more susceptible to decay, especially in the presence of a dry mouth, which is the most common side effect of many prescription medications elderly people take. That decay can also contribute to sensitivity.

Fluoride, which is contained in most toothpastes can help prevent tooth decay and also help stop sensitivity. In more severe cases, your dentist can make custom trays which can hold fluoride and potassium nitrate against your teeth for an extended period of time for a more effective result.
