Teens Shape New Book Club Series at the Shrewsbury Public Library

This past summer, a survey of young adults in Shrewsbury was conducted to see if 1) a book club was something of interest to local teens, and 2) what kind of books should be discussed if there was interest. The results found that 92.5% (of the forty respondents in 5th-12th grades) wanted a regularly scheduled monthly book club at the library, but the genre of book/book selection would determine if most would attend. The top two vote getting categories – 'Real Life Fiction' and 'Sci-Fi and Dystopia' were then added to the young adult events calendar, and on Thursday, October 3rd the first meeting of the 'Real Life Fiction' book club was launched. The first selection, the smash hit The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, was the perfect book for discussion, as it had a relevant topic and relatable characters for readers of all ages and backgrounds. The plot centers on young adults who have different types of cancer and embark on a relationship knowing that it won't last for long. The overall teen consensus was that the book was both moving and heart-felt. They also were somewhat skeptical over the casting of the movie which is currently in production, but felt it was too early to tell if the actors and actresses will do their beloved characters justice. Some reviews from those who attended will be posted in the young adult section of the library. The teens also made cloud quote t-shirts and cancer awareness ribbons.

For teens looking to join a book group, a link to the full schedule can be found here:

The group is 100% free to attend (due to limited space, registration is required through library website), and every session has a craft, snacks, and a small prize donated by Dunkin' Donuts of Shrewsbury. The teens in attendance also help pick the upcoming titles. The next selection for the November 7th Real Life Book Club will be Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. Copies of all the book selections will be held at the circulation desk of the Shrewsbury Library - just ask for one when checking out.  Books should be read prior to coming to each session.  New members are encouraged to join and discover what is quickly becoming one of the most fun book groups around!
