Public Welcomed to See Buddhist Monks in Shrewsbury Through Thursday Morning

“You mean we can just show up?” Absolutely!

On Friday, a couple of friends in the School Department asked about seeing the Gaden Jangtse Tibetan Buddhist monks visiting through the middle of this week at —Independence Hall in Shrewsbury. “You mean we can just show up?”

Absolutely! Yes, just show up whenever you want between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. from now through Thursday morning. In fact, Veterans Inc. and the monks would love it if you did. It’s all part of a cultural exchange both for the monks and us. Visiting is entirely free to the public, though any voluntary donations are certainly welcomed to help support the monk monastery in Southern India.

One of the highlights of the monks’s visit has been the creation of a Mandala (spiritual sand painting) of Healing that will continue to be a work in progress through this Wednesday evening. As you can see in the pictures here, the mandala is a very complex and gorgeously colorful piece of art that takes a combination of concentrated individual and collective effort to make—all from memory.

Special events involving the monks this week include:

Evening of Chanting: Wednesday evening (3/28), 7 p.m. (I’m definitely going—the sound is totally different than anything we’re used to: you can feel it in your body!)

Closing Ceremony - Thursday morning (3/29), 8 a.m. (I’m planning to attend—I’ve had a lot of fun seeing the monks in action and will miss them when they’re gone.)

Veterans Inc. Independence Hall is located at 59 South St., Shrewsbury. For more information, please call 508-845-6176.
