Troop 114 Confers Eagle Scout Honor to Local Marine

Shrewsbury - On January 25, 2014 an Eagle Scout recognition ceremony was held for Joshua A. Mellen, 19, of Shrewsbury, while he was home on leave from the United States Marine Corps.  The Eagle Scout medal was conferred upon Lance Corporal Mellen by Boy Scout Troop 114 Scoutmaster Rick Spurr.

To achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, a Life Scout must have earned 21 merit badges throughout his scouting career, served actively in a position of responsibility within the troop, and have planned, developed and given leadership to an Eagle Scout Service Project that benefits a religious institution, a school or the community.

Joining in 2001, LCpl Mellen began his scouting career with Milford Cub Scout Pack 67.  He crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 114, in 2006, where he held the positions of Patrol Leader, Quartermaster and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and earned 22 merit badges.  He attended the National Scout Jamboree in 2010 at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, and Seabase High Adventure in the Florida Keys in 2011.  His scouting honors include the Arrow of Light (2006), World Conservation Award (2009), National Youth Leader Training (2010), BSA Snorkeling (2011) and the Order of the Arrow, Scouting's National Honor Society (2011).

For his Eagle Scout service project, LCpl Mellen designed and organized the building of three sets of award stands for the Special Olympics of Massachusetts (SOM).  These stands were designed so the tops could be removed from the bases and folded up for easier storage and transportation.  The stands are currently in use at the North, South and West regions of SOM.  The project took a total of 151 volunteer hours.

LCpl Mellen is a 2013 graduate of Assabet Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School where he studied electrical wiring, played football all four years and served as the team captain in his senior year.  He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in October 2013, and is a recent graduate of Military Occupational Specialty training school where he was one of the top five graduates and earned the rank of Lance Corporal meritoriously. He was awarded the "Bursting Bomb" Achievement Certificate for graduating in the top 10% of the class for superior performance, outstanding achievement of technical knowledge, hard work and personal dedication.
