Paintings Stolen from Shrewsbury in 1976 to Be Sold at Auction
The snatched paintings resurfaced in 2007 and will be auctioned in New York.
Two valuable impressionist paintings stolen in 1976 from a Shrewsbury home will be sold in an auction next month.
“In the Sun” by American painter Childe Hassam, and “The Shore of Lake Geneva” by French artist Gustave Courbet, were among the three paintings taken when armed men tied up the Shrewsbury home's owner, Mae Persky, and her nurse and ransacked the house on July 2, 1976.
"In the Sun," is expected to sell for up to $2.5 million; "The Shore of Lake Geneva," could go for up to $300,000, according to an Associated Press story that ran in the Washington Post.

No one has ever been arrested in the home invasion. The paintings are being offered for sale by the heirs of the estate. They resurfaced in 2007 when a Newport, RI, art dealer contacted the FBI after a lawyer and developer, unaware they were stolen, brought them for an appraisal.
