The winter storm heading into the area Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning is now expected to bring up to a foot of snow and blizzard conditions to areas across Massachusetts. A winter storm warning is in effect for Massachusetts through 5 a.m. Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service says blizzard conditions will develop across the coastline. A blizzard warning is in effect for the North Shore, South Shore, Cape Cod and Islands.

In a press conference this afternoon Governor Deval Patrick asked residents in areas east of Worcester to stay off all roads during the height of storm between the hours of 5 p.m. Saturday night and 5 a.m. Sunday morning.

Massachusetts Emergency Management Officials say travel after 5 p.m. will be dangerous due to the heavy snowfall rates, strong winds and near whiteout conditions.

The snow is expected to be heavy and accumulations will be between 8 and 12 inches in most parts of the state.

The heaviest snow is expected to fall after 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. according to the current forecast, with the worst of the system hitting the area between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. Snow is expected to end early Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service says snow will be falling at a rate of 1-2 inches and hour and could include 3 inches an hour during the height of the storm.

Just to clarify - I watched the Gov and he asked all cars EAST OF MARLBOROUGH to stay off the roads

"At the height of the storm, it won't be possible to keep up with the clearing of the roads," said Gov. Deval Patrick. He asked residents who live east of Marlborough, which is all of eastern Massachusetts inside Route 495, to stay off the roads between 5 p.m. Saturday and 5 a.m. Sunday morning Read more: http://www.wcvb.com/weather/storm-brings-heavy-snow-with-high-winds-on-massachusetts-coast/24499956#ixzz2tQZ4klC1

I don't believe anything that comes from the mouth of Deval Patrick.

I thought since this was posted on Monday that this was referring to the 22nd. I guess Patch is hopelessly out of touch.

Everything on the Patch is usually a cpl days behind the rest of the world!!! Hardly anything worth reading ever on here! Bring back the court reports!!!

While it's obvious that the recent cuts at Patch have all but killed most local coverage, the sites still serve a useful purpose. The Gatehouse sites... WickedLocal... instituted a mindless policy nearly a year ago which effectively bans all posting using 'Handles' ... Nom de Plumes... This means that people critical of the status quo or a current administration are exposed to harassment. - - - And, people who speak out DO get harasse4d. - - - As a result, the GateHouse sites and papers have become House Organs for those in power and their agendas. - - - This is ABSOLUTELY NOT what the framers of the Constitution had in mind when they enshrined 'freedom of the press' - - - The real problem is there are few good ways to bring a subject forwward in the Patchiverse.
