'One Free Bag' Week

During the week of Dec. 26-31, as a gift from the town, you get to throw away one bag of trash ... without paying for it.

On Dec. 11, the Board of Selectmen authorized a "one bag free" program during the holiday week running Dec. 26 to Dec. 31. This is the fifth year of this program that has proven to be so popular.

PAYT customers will be allowed to place at the curb one (1) up to 35 gallon or smaller plastic non-PAYT trash bag on their normal day of collection during the period of December 26, 27, 28, 29, and 31, 2012. Please note that the trash pick-up schedule is delayed by one day due to Christmas Holiday.

In addition, a single Christmas tree may be left by the curb without a sticker or attached PAYT bag from Dec. 26 to Jan. 31 that will also be picked up free of charge. All other rules associated with the town's curbside solid waste collection program remain in effect.

Residents are encouraged to make of the one (1) free bag to discard of gift wrap, ribbon and Styrofoam packaging which are all not recyclable at curbside.

The Board has taken this action as a small token of appreciation of the excellent efforts of Shrewsbury residents in making the PAYT so successful during 2012.
