DeFeudis Foundation Adds to Veterans Council Funds

The effort to construct a new World War I monument is sparked by a challenge grant.

Submitted by the Shrewsbury Veterans Council

Gene J. DeFeudis, Shrewsbury resident, local business man and philanthropist, has offered a challenge grant to spur the final push to privately fund a new World War I Monument.

With local fundraising having reached $75,000, this leadership challenge provides the Veterans Council the final public push needed to complete the project.

The Gene J. DeFeudis Family Foundation will provide $25,000 to the Veterans Council as soon as the Council raises $25,000 from other sources. With this commitment, the Council is confident it can leverage local support to allow work on the new monument to start in the spring and be completed by Armistice Day 2013.

To date, the Veterans Council has enjoyed the financial and in-kind support of countless businesses and individuals from Shrewsbury. Leadership gifts have been provided by Babs Donahue, Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union, each Veterans Post in town and several wishing to remain anonymous.

Uniquely, under the leadership of now retired Beal School Principal Alice Brennan, school children collected change to raise money for the monument project and the Library Trustees have donated money raised by fines during certain months to assist in the project.

The Veterans Council has maintained a separate account for monument fundraising through the Victor Quaranta Post. Those wishing to make donations may mail their donations to:
