Talk Like a Pirate Day; Singer-Songwriter at Grafton Inn

Things you ought to know on Thursday, Sept. 19.

1. There are many events planned for the Shrewsbury Public Library this week, as usual. But Thursday takes the cake with two offerings we think you should consider. In the morning, there's a "Book Beats" session for kids 5 and under. Later, it's "Talk Like a Pirate Day," when you not only talk like a pirate - you'll read books about pirates, make crafts and more, matey.

2. The Library Building Committee meets at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, at the library, and the meeting is open to all.

3. There's a drum circle on Friday, Sept. 20, at the First Congregational Church, from 6-9 p.m. All ages and abilities are welcome. According to the Facebook post, "We are an intergenerational group, so bring your kids and your friends and come beat on a drum with us! We have drums to lend and if you don't want to pack a supper, we'll have pizza that you can purchase." RSVP to Christina White (KatatonicState@gmail.com) with how many drums you need and if you want pizza.

4. As posted on its website, "Each year the Shrewsbury Garden Club offers scholarship(s) to further the education of Shrewsbury residents in the fields of horticulture, landscaping, environmental studies or related fields." Find out more about the application here.

5. Kelly Kerr, singer songwriter, performs at the Grafton Inn on Thursday evening.
