- FREE Tree Giveaway - SELCO will be giving away 600 free trees to Shrewsbury residents. All selected varieties are resistant to Asian Longhorn Beetle infestation, and are not classified as host trees. Seedling quantities are limited - first come, first served. Trees will not be distributed before 8:30 a.m. Trees are available to SELCO customers only. Please bring a SELCO bill or other ID proving Shrewsbury residency. Available varieties include:
- Eastern Redbud - Small flowering tree, rosy pink blossoms in April, leaves yellow in fall. Grows to 20' to 30' with 25' to 35' spread.
- European Beech - Leaves are a green in spring, turning to a dark green in summer. The 'beech nuts" act as an important wildlife food source for a variety of animals. Grows 50' to 60' with 40' spread.
- Kousa Dogwood - Year-round beauty, unique late blooming white flowers, purple and scarlet fall leaves. Grows 15' to 25' with 25' spread.
- Sargent Cherry - Beautiful late blooming pink flowers, great fall colors, bird and wildlife friendly fruit. Grows 40' to 50' with equal spread.
- Sargent Crabapple - Pink buds open to pure white blossoms in late spring, provides food for many wildlife species, adds color to fall and winter landscape. Grows 6' to 10' high by 6' to 12' wide.
