Markey or Gomez: Who Gets Your Vote?

If the special election were today, who would you choose as our new U.S. senator?

A week from Tuesday, Massachusetts voters will decide who to elect in the special election to fill the seat vacated by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.  What we at Patch want to know is - if the election were today - who would you vote for? Democrat Ed Markey and Republican Gabriel Gomez have been pullling out all the stops in the last two weeks as the latest polls show the gap is narrowing between the two.  After weeks of relative quiet, the negative ads have started to clog the airways and both candidates have had high-profile folks stumping for them. Rudy Guiliani was in town last week putting his support behind Gomez and President Obama came to Boston this week showing his support for Markey. So tell us, if you had to vote today who…

Supporting a Libertarian or a Green is a good first step in shaking up the establishment and would send chills through the federal establishment in our Congressional system which breeds a two-party system election after election and into the future. I get what your saying though, Gomez has no experience, painted himself a pansy at first and now is a solid right wing Republican. Illegal immigrants…   more ›

Gomez, Markey Spar in First Senate Debate

Gun control, health care, economy, foreign policy among major topics in first meeting of candidates.

Gabriel Gomez and Edward Markey engaged Wednesday in their first debate before the U.S. Senate special election this month, and the tone was markedly similar to the tone of the overall campaign thus far. Gomez, the Republican Cohasset businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL, and Markey, the Democratic Malden congressman since his election in 1976, jabbed at each other during the hour-long debate at WBZ-TV's studios and sponsored by the news station and the Boston Globe. Topics for the evening included gun control, health care, the economy, foreign policy, recent national political scandals, immigration and abortion. Time and again, Gomez pounded Markey for his years in Washington, painting the congressman as out of touch with Bay State …

Gomez to Face Markey in Senate Election

The former Navy SEAL and the longtime Congressman will face off June 25 to fill John Kerry's former U.S. Senate seat.

A political newcomer will face a long-time Massachusetts politician in the race to be the Bay State's next U.S. senator. The Associated Press has declared Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset and Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey of Malden the winners of their U.S. Senate special primary elections, according to tweets from Fox 25. The call for Gomez came approximately one hour after the polls closed in the statewide primary while a call for Markey came moments later. Gomez defeats his more seasoned opponents, former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan of Abington and state Rep. Dan Winslow of Norfolk. Markey beat fellow U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch of South Boston. Brett Rhyne of Needham ran an …

More than 40 percent of Shrewsbury voters cast ballots yesterday setting the stage for Markey, Gomez showdown in the Senate race to fill John Kerry's seat.

With a combined special senate primary and town election, Shrewsbury officials hoped to save voters from heading to the polls twice and cut down the cost of running two elections. The result was that more than 40 percent of the town's voters made it out to the polls, although only half of the voters cast ballots in the senate primaries. Here are the results for the election (Bold indicates winners): Selectmen (Vote for 2) School Committee (Vote for 2) Housing Authority Precinct 1 Precinct 2 Precinct 3 Precinct 4 Precinct 5 Precinct 6 Precinct 7 Precinct 8 Precinct 9 Precinct 10 Precinct 1 (1-year) Precinct 3 (2-years) Precinct 9 (1-Year) Precinct 10 (2-years) Democrat Senator in Congress Primary Republican Senator in Congress Primary

Voter Turnout Low for Town Election, Senate Primary

Poll stations across the town are seeing residents cast their ballots at a slower pace than usual.

Today Shrewsbury residents can have their voice heard when they cast their vote for various town government positions. Shrewsbury voters also get to join voters across the state in selecting the Republican and Democrat candidates that will face off to fill John Kerry's vacated senate seat. But according to Assistant Town Clerk Joyce Record turnout has been low. "We've had pretty low turnout across town. I stopped in to Precinct 9 at noon and they only had 197 voters so far," Record said. At the Shrewsbury Senior Center less than 700 ballots had been cast at 3 p.m., half of them being town election ballots and half being senate primaries ballots. "It's really half of that number," one of the wardens for Precinct 6 at the Senior Center said…

Hybrids and Voters in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury voted for Elizabeth Warren and owns more hybrid cars than the state average.

Shrewsbury is green and blue.  That’s what we found when we compared data from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles to the vote in the 2012 U.S. Senate race. You can see the results in the map above: Large circles suggest towns with more hybrid ownership per capita, and the red/blue color suggests which way those towns voted last year. In Shrewsbury, 20.9 of every 1,000 vehicles is a hybrid, compared to the state average of 18. Patch’s research suggests the state has a good number of what might be called “green Republican” communities. More than 40 percent of the communities where Republican Scott Brown carried the vote have an above average numbers of hybrids. The data is a nice rebuttal to the national trends of hybrid/GOP …
