The Shrewsbury Summer Concert Band, now in its 60th season, performed on the bandstand at Dean Park Wednesday night. The band will return for another performance at 7 p.m. on July 25. In the case of rain, the performance will be held at Oak Middle School.
Gov. Deval Patrick visited the College of the Holy Cross this weekend to honor ambassadors to Project 351. Students from around the state, including two from Shrewsbury, reunited for a conference at the college over the weekend. The two students are: Jaehyun (Jae) Lee and Megan Downing. "Project 351 is designed to inspire, challenge and motivate our next generation of leaders to give back and make a significant impact in the community," said Patrick. A carnival held in the Shrewsbury Public Library yesterday served as the Summer Reading Kickoff. Participants were entertained by clowns, played games, crafted crowns, got their faces painted, and more. The event was held from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. and participants were asked to register for the summer reading program for their age group in order to attend. The event was sponsored by the Friends of the Shrewsbury Public Library.
Families were invited to play Frisbee golf at Spring Street Elementary School on Saturday. The course was set up around the school. Frisbees and score cards were provided. The event was part of the school district physical education department’s Get Fit Family Adventure series, which is being held through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) grant. The district learned on Oct. 1 that it received the $1.4 million grant, which will be used over the next three years. School officials decided to hold an indoor field day at Spring Street School on Monday, but kids still loved the games and activities. Saturday's rain didn't stop children from attending the Kid's Equipment Day during which they got to check out the town's equipment, pretend to drive it, and even honk some horns. The event was held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Municipal Highway Garage, 211 South St., and children were given plastic hard hats to add to the experience. Two students from Shrewsbury High School shared the honor of winning an art award that allowed them both to have an art show at the Westboro Gallery this weekend. Teagan Flint and Stephanie Kalinowski, both seniors at the high school, submitted artwork and shared the award. "This is such a great honor and we're best friends," said Kalinkowski. An Indian Culture Celebration was held at Spring Street Elementary School Saturday, featuring activities such as storytelling, board games, cricket, food sampling, Bollywood dancing, and a fashion show. The festival also included artwork, crafts, and more. As part of the festival, students created soup pots to raise money to help Akshaya Patra, "a non-profit group that feeds the poorest children in India." Hundreds of people participated in the 8th annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Shrewsbury, which started at 6 p.m. Friday and continued until 11 a.m. Saturday. According to event organizers, the relay raised roughly $42,000. Donations are still being accepted and can be made by clicking here. Throughout the past eight years, the Shrewsbury event has raised more than $500,000 for the American Cancer Society, according to event co-chairs Shelly Keene and Mary Pritchard. The Shrewsbury Historical Society has displayed a Special Titanic Anniversary Exhibit and items can be viewed on Saturdays from now throughout the summer. The exhibit, which consists of two display cases, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, which occurred on April 15, 1912. Items include books, newspaper articles, photos and more. The exhibit also features information about Lillian Asplund of Shrewsbury, the last American survivor of the tragedy. Morgan, 16, and her cousins Sheila, 16, and Katie Bashant, 18, came all the way from Ballston Lake, N.Y., to participate in the 5th Annual Shrewsbury Road Scholars 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run at Oak Middle School Sunday—and it was worth the trip. The three took the top medals in the women's age 14 to 18 category. Sheila, who received the first place medal, and Katie, who received second place, are sisters and formerly lived in Shrewsbury. Colorful masks made of sequins, feathers and glitter filled the large meeting room at the library as children enjoyed learning about Mardi Gras. The children who attended the events at the library on Wednesday and Friday also made dice to use in a game where they were the moving pieces. Both parents and children alike enjoyed learning about the Mardi Gras festivities and took home colorful masks and beads in honor of the New Orleans celebration.

In front of the library, town officials and residents gathered to honor all those who have served in wars. Boy Scout Troop 4 and Cub Scout Troop 138 led the veterans to assemble in front of the Shrewsbury Public Library where Shrewsbury's Veteran's Memorial stands. The ceremony included a reading of the veterans lost in the previous year and a laying of the wreath by American Legion Post 397 Commander Ron Pelletier.
