The Vermont Quilt Festival recently celebrated its 35th anniversary at the Champlain Valley Expo in Essex Junction, VT. One local quilter, Jody Palmer, of Shrewsbury, was one of 200 applicants from across the United States and abroad that had their quilt accepted into this annual judged show. The festival is New England’s oldest and largest quilt event. In addition to having the quilts exhibited, there are classes, lectures and demonstrations for attendees to participate. It took Palmer three years of attending to finally enter one of her quilts. Palmer started quilting in 2002 when her …
Green Hill Farm is home to many animals, a sugarhouse, gardens and more. Beth Hook married into the family that still owns the land the farm sits on today. Her father in law purchased the property in 1949. In addition, many people participate in the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), buying shares for a season of fresh eggs and harvest from the gardens. The house that Beth and her husband, Pete, live in was originally on South Street and moved to this location. There are 76 acres that make up the property. Kerry Donovan has always loved animals and grew up surrounded by horses, dogs, cats and guinea pigs. She opened her business, All the DO DOG DAY Doggie Daycare and Grooming in January of 2010. Since then, she has had a steady flow of canine clients. Fifteen years ago, three women decided to prepare for the high school’s Homecoming and turn it into a town-wide event. That idea has since turned into a major highlight for the town of Shrewsbury and all who attend the fall festivities. The Spirit of Shrewsbury, as it is now known, is a variety of events that range from a craft fair, antique car show, trade show expo, parade, food festival, pumpkin display, scarecrow making contest and display on the town common, live music and more. Melissa Hollenback, President of the Shrewsbury Education Foundation, is always looking for new and innovative ways to help support those employed by the Shrewsbury School System. It is her mission to help provide grants to classrooms for enrichment as well as basic necessities that are needed. SEF was started in 1992 after a failed override. Elaine Griffith has developed a program where anyone, regardless of his or her age or artistic ability can paint. Her program, Art Is 4 Every 1 launched in 2009 and has people everywhere “buzzing” about this method. She teaches in schools, camps, nursing homes, institutions, assisted living facilities and more. Deanna Swan has always been lured by the theater. In fact, it was the 200-seat theater that led her to Southgate where she is now the program director of the independent retirement community. “As program director, I handle the educational programs, spiritual programs and cultural programming for the residents that live here. I worked as a cruise director for Carnival doing shows. Many people have said that the design of Southgate resembles a cruise ship. It really does, and this job is very much like that. With all of the reality cake decorating shows on television today, it’s an honor to meet two young, talented women who get giddy at the thought of coming to work. Amanda Russell and Mara Mahoney are the cake decorators at the Bean Counter Bakery and do all of the design work and baking for cakes at the Shrewsbury location as well as the Worcester location. Mahoney has worked at the bakery for the past seven years and is a graduate of Johnson and Wales. After graduating college, she worked at the Beechwood Hotel and worked at the bakery on her days off to do more of the cakes and pastries.  …
