Long-time Shrewsbury Resident Dies
Valborg M. “Bergie” (Volstad) Ciani, 88, died on May 12.
Valborg M. “Bergie” (Volstad) Ciani, 88, of Worcester, died Saturday, May 12, in Beaumont Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Worcester after an illness.
Her husband of 58 years, Saverino Ciani died in 2004. She leaves a brother, Fritz Volstad of Calgary, Canada; her two caregivers, sister-in-law, Mary Ciani of Worcester; and Bergie’s wonderful friend, Martha Mooney of Worcester; also survived by many nieces and nephews in the Canada and the United States, including her special niece, Joan Alexander of California.
Bergie was born Claresholm, Alberta, Canada, daughter of the Late Ole E. and Marie O. (Hatland) Volstad. She was educated in Canada and moved to the United States in 1946. Bergie and her husband, Saverino had made their home in Shrewsbury for over 60 years before she moved to Worcester.
Bergie was a very talented seamstress and had made many articles of clothing for her family throughout the years. She also enjoyed gardening and later in life became a tremendous and award winning golfer.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ciani will be private at her request. Burial will take place in Ciani family lot in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Salmon Hospice Care, 42 Beaumont Drive, P.O. Box 940, Northbridge, MA 01534.
