Help Buy A Bullet-Proof Vest for Buzzy the K9

Have your dog's pic taken with Santa to raise money for a dog who protects the community.

For years, Buzzy has been protecting local citizens, and now Barb Smith thinks it's time we help him, she told the Community Advocate.

Smith owns Canine Pet Sitting and K9 Hydrotherapy in Northborough.

On Saturday, Dec. 8, Companion Pet Sitting hosts a "Pictures With Santa" fundraising event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise money to buy Buzzy the K-9 from the Shrewsbury Police Department a bullet-proof vest.

Award-winning photographer Jeffery A. Baker, of Visions by Baker, Worcester, is also donating his services and will take photos of pets with Santa (who will be played by Shrewsbury Patrolman and Buzzy's handler Chad Chysna, aka "Santa Claus" on this day).

Sittings are by appointment only.

Barb Smith, owner of Companion Pet Sitting, added that "several of you have asked about if folks want to donate to Buzzy's vest. We did look into having an account set up, but it is complicated and time consuming."

Instead, Smith said a check can be made out to Companion Pet Sitting with a note in the memo stating that it is for "Buzzy's Vest Fund."

"Whatever we collect will be deposited and one check with be given to the Shrewsbury Police department for whatever we raise for his vest," said Smith. "We filled every spot on Saturday and even had to extend the hours. We have some items that will be raffled off in exchange for additional donations as well."

Also, for those who wish to donate but cannot attend the fundraiser, make checks payable to Shrewsbury Police K9 Donation and send to Shrewsbury Police, 106 Maple Ave., Shrewsbury, MA 01545, attention Officer Chad Chysna.

I just talked with Patrolman Chysna on the phone not long ago. He had to run, as Buzzy and he were headed into a raid as we speak. Buzzy needs a vest!

Is there a place we can just donate? My cats are not able to come out for a pet picture : )

Hey Carol. Definitely. If you call Companion Pet Sitting or the Shrewsbury Police Department, they could tell you where to donate for sure. I'm sure Buzzy would truly appreciate that....

Great cause. How much does the vest cost and how much is currently needed to buy it?
Just wondering - do human officers have to buy their own vests?
I don't think service professionals of any species should be put in harm's way without adequate protection.

This a great cause, but where is the Town of Shrewsbury on this? Why does Officer Chysna have to organize a fundraiser for something the town should be providing? If nothing else, they should be "protecting their investment". I would be willing to bet that the cost of purchasing Buzzy, and his subsequent training far outweigh the expense of a vest. Just my opinion.

Many thanks to the folks at Companion Pet Sitting/K9 Hydrotherapy in Northborough. Karen and I had a great day photographing many wonderful puppies with Santa to raise money for a new bulletproof vest for Buzzy, Shrewsbury's brave police dog. They raised $800! Check out the online gallery here!
