Going for Gold

This week's Whiz Kid won a national competition two years in a row.

Name:  Alec Maher

Age/Grade: 8 and going into second grade

School: Touchstone Community School in Grafton

Accomplishment: Alec won gold at Karate Nationals and becomes a two-time National Champion in karate. Alec and his family traveled to Arlington, TX to compete in The USA National Karate Federation's National Championship, sanctioned by the United States Olympic Committee on July 14-17. Alec won gold in co-ed team kata and also in individual kumite (sparring) and also bronze in boys team kata. There were over 2,000 competitors from all over the country. Alec studies karate at Massdojo in Shrewsbury under Sensei Eric Rossini. Sensei Rossini also teaches karate at Touchstone Community School where Alec attends.

Key to awesomeness: Alec sets his mind on a goal and commits himself to it. Whether it is schoolwork, playing with friends or sports, he always gives it his all. He works as hard as he can to make it happen. His perseverance and dedication have really paid off.
