District Honors, District Wins and Grants Galore: the Superintendent's Recap
Letter from the superintendent shines a light on wins, awards and accomplishments at the schools.
Submitted by Superintendent of Schools Joe Sawyer
As we begin the Thanksgiving break, I wanted to provide you with a few updates:
• SHS Successes: Congratulations to the many SHS students who have represented our community with distinction in various competitions. A few recent highlights include:
The Speech and Debate team finished 9th out of close to 100 schools from 10 different states in a recent regional tournament in at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.
Based on competitive auditions, forty SHS musicians and vocalists were selected for All District honors, and of these 20 are being honored as All State.
The fall play, Romeo & Juliet, was a success, while the Theatre Department won the prestigious Moss Hart Award given by the New England Theatre Conference for last year's fall play, The Outsiders. - The Field Hockey team won the district championship and made it all the way to the Division 1 state final.
The Boys Cross Country team finished second in the District championships and third in the Division 1 state championship meet, its best state performance ever.
The Cheerleading Team finished third in the district championship and sixth in the state tournament in Division 1.
The Girls Cross Country, Soccer, and Volleyball teams all competed in district playoffs.
The Football team has qualified for the playoffs, which will begin next week -- good luck to the Colonials in their Thanksgiving game at Milford on Thursday morning at 10:15am.
Our community should be proud of these outstanding achievements!
• Shrewsbury Educators Earn Grants: Several Shrewsbury educators recently were awarded grants by two different important school district partners. The annual Shrewsbury Education Foundation Grants were announced, and the following educators were successful in earning funding for innovative projects: Kristine Gustafson & Ann Early (Paton School); Kristin Stewich (Parker Road Preschool); Carol Virzi (Sherwood Middle School); Heidi Richard and Kara Frankian (Floral Street School); Kitty Raymond (Coolidge School); Rabecca Moisan and Jean-Marie Johnson (SHS); Scott Bartholomew and Paul Wood (SHS); Shirley LeMay (Spring Street, Floral Street, and Middle Schools); Ellen O'Leary, Suzanne Margiano, and Cara Demoga (Floral Street School); and Shari Fox (SHS). More specifics will be available in the near future; these educators will be honored at the SEF's annual dinner on January 19, 2013.
The annual Corridor 9 Area Chamber of Commerce Mini-Grants were also announced, and the following Shrewsbury educators will be honored at a breakfast on Nov. 27: Nancy Bedard (Oak Middle School); Erin Kendrick (Coolidge School); Darcy Messineo (Spring Street School); and Ellen O'Leary, Cara Demoga, and Suzanne Margiano (Floral Street School).
We greatly appreciate these grants provided by Shrewsbury Education Foundation and the Corridor 9 Area Chamber of Commerce, which provide the funding that enables us to do innovative work that benefits students. Thanks, too, to the educators who put in the time and effort to procure these resources for our school programs.
•John P. Collins Awards for Excellence: Our educators work very hard to help our children, and many go well above and beyond to ensure excellence in our educational program. Parents, I ask that you consider nominating an educator who has made a difference for your child for this prestigious honor, which is sponsored by the Shrewsbury Education Foundation. This relatively new tradition recognizes excellence among Shrewsbury staff, and includes awards in the categories of professional educator, paraprofessional, support staff, team, and leadership. Those nominated receive a copy of the nomination letter, which is an honor itself. Only this year's nominations are considered, so if you nominated someone in the past you may want to re-nominate them.
Thank you for your continued support of our schools, and please accept my best wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
