VIDEO: Chapel Dedicated to Longtime Volunteers

Veterans Inc. honored a local couple who have volunteered with the organization for almost 15 years.

Dorothy Whiting said she saw an advertisement in the newspaper asking for volunteers at

"Milton was a veteran and he said, 'That's something I'd like to do,'" she said. "So we started coming to the Worcester location and helped out."

Whiting said at first, they hung back and just helped wherever they were needed. "Then we asked if we could renovate the kitchen," she said. She asked if $25,000 would be enough to do the project. The officials said it would be closer to $50,000.

"We wrote a check and the project was started," she said. "At the same time I was diagnosed with cancer, so I couldn't help out as much as I wanted to, but they would call and tell me the fridge was in or the oven was going in."

Then she said it was difficult to come to the Worcester location to help because of the 25 steps to go into the building.

"We asked what it would take to build a working elevator for the veterans who are in wheelchairs or on crutches," she said. "So we donated to help make that happen."

One of the best rewards from volunteering is the gratitude that has been given to the Whitings. "So many veterans have said that we have helped them and it is an amazing feeling," she said. "That's why we keep coming back."

And Dorothy said she's someone who gets upset when things aren't right. "If I see a problem, I want to fix it," she said. "And this was such a surprise to have the chapel dedicated to us, but the organization is wonderful to work with."

Case Manager Jessica Lemenager made a quilt out of used shirts from the veterans and donated fabric from Freecycle. Veterans and officials signed the quilt that was given to the couple.

"They have done so much for this organization," she said. "They are really great people."
