5 Things You Need to Know Today: Sept. 20

A battle of the sexes and curriculum nights make it into the five things.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1. Today is National Punch Day, so if you love boxing, stop by your favorite local gym and get in a good workout. But if you are more apt to enjoy the juice-like punch, than stop by Price Chopper or Stop & Shop and pick up a bottle of Hawaiian Punch. No matter the kind of punch, take a minute to enjoy the day your way. And if you love craft punches, pick one up at Michael's or Jo-Ann's.

2. In one of the first battles of the sexes, Billie Jean King defeats Bobby Riggs in a tennis match in 1973. Thanks to the defeat, woman now feel comfortable competing against men in any arena. Grab your racket today and head to Dean Park to toss a few tennis balls around with your favorite teammate to honor King and Riggs.

3. Want to learn more about your child's school? It's curriculum night at Coolidge (Grades 3 & 4), Paton (Grades 3 & 4) and Spring Street schools (Grades K, 1 & 2).

4. Looking for a new music class for your child? Try a Free Sample Class with Apple Country Music Together, at 9:15 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church.

5. Want to help your child learn to read? Stop by the Baby and Me Story Time at the Shrewsbury Public Library, 10:30 a.m., 609 Main St.
